First impressions count for web
Posted by: ri on Monday, January 16, 2006 - 03:30 PM
projectsInternet users make up their minds about the quality of a website in the blink of an eye, a study shows. Researchers found that the brain makes decisions in just a twentieth of a second of viewing a webpage.

They were surprised as they believed it would take at least 10 times longer to form an opinion.

The study, published in the journal Behaviour and Information Technology, also suggests that first impressions have a lasting impact.

The decision, announced Thursday, was made by the EU antitrust chief, Neelie Kroes, and is a first since new powers introduced last year. It is focused on whether Microsoft is complying with a March 2004 order about powerful server computers.

Massachusetts mandates open-format docs, edges toward Linux
Posted by: ri on Friday, September 02, 2005 - 06:30 PM
rants & ravesThe state of Massachusetts will revamp its digital output during the next 16 months to create only open-format documents and is increasing its use of Linux and free and open source software (FOSS) among its workers, the state's chief information officer told DesktopLinux.com Thursday in a conference call.

CIO Peter Quinn challenged Microsoft and other companies who sell software that uses proprietary document formats to consider enabling open-format options as soon as possible. Quinn said that "government is creating history at a rapidly increasing rate, and all documents we save must be accessible to everybody, without having to use 'closed' software to open them now and in the future."

Microsoft Plays Russian Roulette with Longhorn
Posted by: ri on Sunday, June 26, 2005 - 04:50 PM
rants & ravesWith a bullet in every chamber.

Every time I hear another announcement on what Longhorn will implement or what new tricks it will learn to perform, I have the feeling that I’m watching a show where the magician pulls rabbits out of a hat.

Microsoft’s strategy of releasing bits of information on Longhorn is understandable considering that December 2006 is far away and that hardware producers, software developers and users must be kept alert.
Note: Looks like one more reason to be running Linux or Macintosh!
